FAQ:

What does the Living Harvest actually provide?

The Living Harvest provides the first experience for you and your loved ones to grow food you want to eat, with only the efforts of stewarding the garden, protecting it, pruning, and harvesting. The Kalos Project sets up the soil with unimpeachable integrity of the highest quality to grow organic, fresh produce that brings out the true tastes and smells that some of us remember from our childhoods or from where we moved.

Intensive gardening provides 32 vegetables and fruits packed in with square foot gardening and companion planting strategies. We grow what is in season and what you eat, nothing you don't.

Herbs for medicinal or culinary use allow you to have fun with cooking and grandma's remedies for when we get scratches or get sick. I love pulling my rosemary and adding it to my steaks. The fruit tree is the cornerstone to any long-lasting home, providing more and more pounds of fruit year after year. And you get to pick what you want us to plant. We have the list of Bob Randall's best picks for Houston's weather extremes.

The cherry on top, as we say, are the Broccoli Sprouts — start eating after 7 days. Broccoli sprouts store an inactive precursor called glucoraphanin, kept separate from an enzyme called myrosinase. When you chew, chop, or otherwise damage the plant tissue, the two meet and myrosinase converts glucoraphanin into active sulforaphane.

Sulforaphane is one of the strongest natural triggers of something called the Nrf2 pathway. Think of Nrf2 as a switch sitting quiet inside your cells. Sulforaphane flips it on. It moves into the nucleus and activates a whole line of protective genes — your body's own detox machinery.

This is the key: sulforaphane isn't an antioxidant you're swallowing. It tells your cells to build their own defenses. It wakes up the system. That's why it goes deeper and lasts longer than just taking an antioxidant straight.

What does life look like when you and your family get to eat produce picked from your own home?

You aren't thinking about it anymore, you are actually doing it!!

From here on out, you are building upon this experience: tasting the ripe vegetables and fruit that traveled 15–30 ft to your kitchen, not 1,500–3,000 miles. Real nutrition comes from the plants, veggies, and fruits that have vine-ripened into their truest expression of what they were designed to be, not picked 3–4 weeks early just to make the trip to the grocery store down the road.

This is food the way it was always meant to be, grown with intention, harvested with your own hands, and shared with the people you love most. And that changes everything.

What if I've never successfully grown anything?

You don't have to have any experience growing food to get started with the Living Harvest. The irrigation runs itself, so you can't forget to water it, which is how most people fail at gardening. The soil arrives biologically active, doing the work that normally takes a gardener years of skill to develop. You show us where the bed can go, and if something doesn't survive its first season, we replace it.

This is made so that you can start your growing journey at home regardless of your experience or confidence in growing food. The Living Harvest is the first step to truly connecting you and your loved ones to the food you eat, from the moment it's picked from the soil.

Everyone deserves to experience that firsthand, whether they grew up on a farm or in the city. That's why we want to help those who don't have the time, money, or experience to start from scratch. We give you a blueprint on how to get started and provide support moving forward, so that you don't have to worry about losing any progress and can focus on growing food for yourself and for your loved ones.

How soon will I see results?

The moment you install your Living Harvest system, you will have a new daily adventure, seeing what is blooming or ripening that day. And wow, does it bring your family together. It brings a new spot for family bonding, a newfound appreciation for the food in your kitchen, and a real connection with nature, all from your very own home.

You'll be eating your first sprouts within 7 days. Your fruit tree arrives already 4 to 5 years mature, meaning you'll be picking fruit off your own tree this season, not waiting years or decades for it. Everything else unfolds around what you choose to grow, and we walk you through every option before anything goes into the ground.

The real results will be the benefits you and your family experience from having your own connection with the land, and those stick around for a lifetime. The option to use ingredients from your very own home is something money can't buy, and something that will bring life to your home like nothing else.

How much time and effort does this really take to maintain?

The irrigation runs itself, so there's no daily routine to maintain, just checking on the plants like a good shepherd looking after a flock. When plants get overgrown, cut them back. Once harvest time is here, you will already have a plan for what you want to plant next, tailored to our location and the season. We love recurring revenue, so we will always be happy to do it for you if you are too busy or out of town. But really, this is grade school stuff — you've got this, and we've got you if you need anything.

And taking care of your plants will give you a level of satisfaction and fulfillment that only comes from growing something with your own hands — watching it go from garden bed to table, and knowing your family is eating something real because you made it happen. Tending to your own little piece of nature, even for just five minutes a day, has a way of bringing people back to what actually matters. It builds qualities of love and compassion in a way that makes every other area of life more beautiful.
